Cantabrian axeman
Cantabrian people were used the/bipennis/ double-headed battle axe during the cantabrian wars against romans
This could be a mercenary, an auxiliar roman unit, or a celtic unit (cantabrian were celts)

As i said, this could be mercenary since they were mercenaries,, roman auxilia since they fought for roman as auxilia...as celtic unit too...
But i dont think splashdamage could be an option...idk

What uniqueness should this unit have then if not splash melee attacks? I think it suits it.

Well, i don't really care if this becomes a mercenary, an auxilia or a Celt. But i think mercenary category will fit it the most.

Maybe a 2 turns mercenary?

Yeah, i guess 2 turns with some tier 2 stats with 4 or 5 leaving. Focusing on eliminating swarms of cheap infantry.

Double-headed axe appears commonly in myths or as a symbol and there was almost none (or none at all) found at the battlefield remains.
Taking into account opinions of HEMA specialists, that such weapon wouldn't really have any advantage - real usage could be easily taken as fiction.
Besides the only mention of it is in description of Larus (the leader of Cantabri contigent during Punic Wars ), while the unit is only sure to use caetras (probably easiest described as ancient bucklers). One of the sources indicates usage of battle axes (which would make sense why shield had to be rather small and tied to arm), but they could just as well use any other weapon more commonly.

Coming back to unit idea itself - it could be light infantry with aoe damage.

Depends on the stats - either regular roman (but described as auxilary) or merc.

Btw. I just remembered, that when sources mentioned celts in roman armies, they often had Celtiberians in mind, so it could actually mean cantabrians too. And most mentions were about medium-heavy cavalry, rarely deployed as foot units.

If you want it to be roman then the looks of the cantabrian axeman should be an auxiliary. That way it could be trained in also roman garrisons as an ancient mercenary unit.

Auxiliar is different of mercenary...
Auxiliar units donth ave leaving...
Thats not a propper comparision

Never said that it will be an auxiliary. Just the looks will be similar. If that is not good then just make it have an appearance of a generic ancient cantabrian axeman.

Mmh, maybe just make a cantabrian generic mercenary...
I found about caetrati medium infantry armed with a gladius hispaniensis or a iberian falcata...or scutarii (i made a topic and a sprite for it) those could fit better for iberian mercenary i think

Iberian Caetrati

I think i am writting it in the correct way...
Basicaly an iberian infantry unit armed with iberian falcata or gladius hispaniensis...
Proposed stats:
Even if iberian people were in majority celts, i think makng it a mercenary unit would fit better...
So
Cost 2 turns
Leaving 3
Hp 17
Attack 7
Range1
Armor 1/0
Speed 3
Active effect: veteran
Binuses
+25% vs heavy infantry , ranged
+50% vs light, medium infsntry
+100% vs fortified buildings

I think this redirection is a better option since this unit fits better the mercenary role

Veteran is more or less useless on someone with leaving

I agree. Veteran is near useless to a unit that leaves in 3 turns.
Best to just make it a light infantry with aoe damage that specializes in taking out swarms of infantry.
As of now, we don't have aoe mercenary so i think it fits to that role.

Leaving is actually to nerf it...
Btw, the aoe was for cantabrian axeman, now i think caetrrati fits better...
And for early game, a 2 turns veteran unit is really powerfjll

I thought that stats was a posted suggestion for cantabrian axe warrior. Endru probably merged it to here for a reason.
