I think that would be pretty cool. I'm thinking they are great for building destruction and fighting other special units like the ogers

Its already planned, not steam, but something close enough to fill that niche

Indeed not exactly a steam powered but some mechanical golems will be in for gnomes later. Non-human looking ones as well.
