Ornis have the throwing category. Noticed this because an old orni had plus 2 range, grandfathered from the old smith range techs. Presumably this means new range techs would give a new orni plus 2 range as well...is this right? Seems a bit... powerful, high speed high attack and ranged dam.

Nope.
Ranged reach tech is only applied on [Flesh and blood] units with [Archer], [Throwing] except [Melee] and both excluding units with [No upgrades] an [No weapon upgrade] categories.

But it is affected by damage techs.

OK, so the extra range is just a temporary thing with my grandfathered ornithopters . Cool, that means the handful of range 3 ornis I got are limited edition

It an issue with grandfather techs - archery.
They are not researchable anymore.
