Besides spartan. There doesn't seem to be any cheap melee unit available for the Greeks.

I suggest for the light hoplite to do the job. I don't think there's any imbalance in that.

i didnt know spartan was a cheap unit jeje

i suggest adding akonstatai, since low class people in greek society used to carry the skirmisher role, we can keep the main factory for real citizen units

btw i was thinking and there are two certain options for greek supporter: a hoplite style foot commander or companion cavalry style mounted commander, i bring this topic because hellenic obviously lack of this kind of unit

There is also option for philosophers and i think fire siphon related techs should also belong to hellenic, philosophers could either have buffs for infantry or mathematical genius related buff for siege

I do not think that philosophy of greeks must be in form of philosopher units.
It will be better to make it in form of tech unique to greek units.

For buffs we could pick some iconic temple priests.
Maybe Apollo priestess?

Oracle as first buff coming into mind.

maths were not that advanced i think...
it would be more of conversion specialist? maybe demoralize spell as well?

maybe two stages of hellenic culture: first pre socratic, with oracles and classical units, and then a post socratic with propper hellenic units and philosopher (i would preffer sophist instead)

That sounds MUCH better.
As for philosophy — it might be a tech exclusive to Greece that improves some way mechanical units. Probably decreasing attack chance will be good variant.

Anything with stages is a problem, because of no real precedent to ever remove/replace units.
Only upgrade is acceptable and there is no freaking way to tie it with upgrades.

Skirmisher for me are different things altogether.

In terms of buffs. I agree with oracles and priests.

Like some god of war's blessing or basically any Greek God + blessing trope.

maybe with the name of gods?
like ares blessing: +2 attack +1/+1 armor
zeus blessing: +1 attack +1/+0 armor +100% CR
hermes blessing: +0/+1 armor +1 speed

idk something like that?

about stages, i just though of something like sophist as unit that comes upgraded into philosopher with something like "socrates' teachings" idk

So priestess can use different god's blessings to buff individual units, as for maths, archimedes had his eureka moment while having a bath, it was time for many mathematical and technological discoveries, even now scientists use greek alphabet to denote mathematical terms which shows the influence ancient greece had in modern mathematics

Infkuence of an alphabet doesnt mean that they did have great advances in maths, they did anyway, but mainly i think for architecture purposes, nothing special that rome could have, so if they would have any special bonus for siege that would be shared with roman culture.
Anyway i did found a concept of siege used in grrek warfare i think it was "poliertikiti" dont really remember though...
