Theynalready upgrade to master skirmishers, which are very decent units.... If they were good against cavalry, they would literally have almost no weakness...

The archer armour and archer mastery at the blacksmith already apply to skirmishers. With all combined you have a super powerful ranged unit which is invincable against range, can hold his own against weaker melee, and is produced in 2 turns.
