Some basic infantry units could have +1 Armor if they stand in a line (at least 5 units) or a quarter (at least 9 units), mounted units +1 attack.

I think this is a good idea! +1
it would encourage people to be more strategic.
3x3 is a bit too much, though...
3x1 should gain +1 armor,
3x2 +1 armor +1 peirce armor,
4x3 +2 armor, +1 peirce armor
The front line must be the same unit, but behind that, you can vary
