The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

I love Lotr most, but some honourable mentions would be:
The Black Company
The first law trilogy and its standalones
The swan wars trilogy
The Intiate brother *must read in my opinion*

Forgive my ignorance, but I do not know what these things you call "books" are?

My fav books are many-
The robin hood
The 3 musketeers
The adventures of tom sawyer
and any asterix obelix books
Also enid blyton's mystery series!

Three Musketeers was hard to start at first, but I liked it. I loved Tom Sawyer(and Huckleberry Finn, and Tom Sawyer Detective.... ). Robin Hood had a sad, sad ending

tom sawyer was one of my favorite in my chilfhood (i read it 8-10 times, and Winnetou)

now i can say:
- Cathedral
- Shogun
- brave new world
- 451 fahrenheit
- 1984
- asimov robot books
- yes, the LOTR was fairly good
i have many more...

Too many to to count them

There was a nice samurai triology.
A waterloo version, Faust 2 (yust a joke xD), LOTR, GOT (read all)
A few other books from got and lotr author.
A ton of Books where i only know the german title
(And am to lazy to search the english)

Because it is different I don't do a lot into mainline modern fantasy - just Tolkien and a few classics.

but there is mainly LOTR things there, even a campaign of LOTR (in early stage tough)

Asimov's Robot/Empire/Foundation (ESPECIALLY Foundation) series are by far my favorite fictional work. I have read all 6 of Asimov's foundation books 4 times.

Second is dystopian sci-fi of many authors but 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 are probably the top 2 (I've read 1984 3 times... such a powerful story). I have actually been writing an homage to 1984 to try and bring the same message into a more modern/applicable context.

I'm currently reading Stephen Baxter's Xeelee Sequence. For those people that like hard sci-fi, I highly recommend this also.

It's funny though because I actually love fantasy novels. I've read far more fantasy than I have sci-fi, but I can't always remember what they are called.

If there are any fantasy novel enthusiast here, please message me as I have been trying to find a fantasy novel I read almost 20 years ago.

Have you read Jonathan Swift, First-Speaker? His satire is at places like Dystopian Fiction.

Oh, well it is difficult to explain. It's a worldview thing - Tolkien has a very specific worldview in all of his writings, and it is all clearly laid out; but in all the mainstream fantasy the worldviews are all jumbled up (like WoW and D&D and all). And everything is all confusing and mixed around. So that's why I don't like it so well.

The difference is Tolkien built the world, then wrote a story around it, hence why it's so solid and thick with lore. Not many other authors have done as Tolkien did. All of his work on middle earth is beyond what many others could even dream of producing. The fact that he created and scripted dozens of languages for the peoples of his world says it all.

I don't particularly like his writing style, but I cannot deny that he is one of the greatest writers of all time. I have profound respect for him as a writer and world-builder.

If there are avid fantasy readers out there, I read a fantastic fantasy novel many, many years ago that I have been trying to find. I cannot remember what it was called, but I remember there was "ancient ruins", one of which was a castle that moved its rooms and only one old man understood the castle.

The main character was a male warrior. I think there was some kind of power animal symbology too (the man talked often of eagles from memory).

If someone can help me, I will give you an internet high five.
