It is basically the flood from Halo. They Can infect enemy, (also poison) and may able to convert enemy to their own (While sacrificing them)

I'd still like more detail to see which direction you are headed with the swarm faction.

They transform the victim to seem like they are infected, like different pigment of skin, but this is just a idea
