Example: You press greyed catapult before researching balistics and you get an dialog message:
Technology required: Balistics
Or for tiger I in AoWW
Press him greyed out and then you get dialog:
Tehnology required: Heavy Tank Constructions

Doesn't it say it in red already under the unit in the production menu?

yes, but somebody plays with square unit menu, and usually forget to change the unit menu

But if you know the game well enough to play with the square menu shouldn't you already know the needed tech?...
