So, the US army was looking to an assault vehicle to break the siegfried line, it firstly had to carry the 105mm T5E1 gun (That proven be a very good against concrete/reinforced structures), be armored enough to sustain the German 8.8cm guns and also be a turreted tank. They started picking M26 and adapted it with very dense frontal armor with open turret design like the other SPG's.

They figured out that leaving the open turret would be not the ideal idea for an assault tank, so they decided to reinforce the top.

But they reached the conclusion that the ideal would be a even more reinforced structure, so they did removed the turret and reinforced the front.

They noticed that they had put too much weight on the tracks, so to distribute better the weight, they added 2 more tracks, and ofc, added a stronger shielding to this monster...

The war was passing and when it was almost ready to go, the allieds had already breached through the Siegfried line in some parts, so it was late for what it was intended... But they believed that it still could be used in the Japan campaign, thinking that there would be massive bunkers there aswell, so they tested it with a 120mm gun, but the war there was finished before it could be shipped there... There was hope that if a 155mm gun where put it still could be used. But the program was ended in face of other tanks under developement as T29(105mm), T34(120mm) and T30(155mm) heavy tanks that where fitting the initial desired conditions.

In the history of this tank, it had used 2 names, for some time it was called as T28 and then, as T95, then back to T28... i believe we can separate it in two, the turreted one and the one without turret, with that each can have their own upgrade version. The turreted one will be more flexive, while the other is a true slow moving fortress (with more than 300mm frontal armor).
